About Media Art Friesland

The Media Art Friesland Foundation presents contemporary art to a wide and diverse audience in the North of the Netherlands. The main activity of Media Art Friesland is the annual festival LUNA, consisting of the program components LUNA Young Masters, LUNA Nights and LUNA Currents.

Our main focus with LUNA Young Masters (formerly known as Media Art Festival) is on talent development and presenting up-and-coming talent from home and abroad. We like to offer experimentation space and exposure to artists and look for new organizational forms of collaboration with partner institutions.

Since 2016 we have also been going massively to public space with the LUNA Nights (formerly knows as LUNA Leeuwarden Urban Night Adventure). We present light, sound and performance art by makers from the region and by prominent international artists in numerous places in the beautiful city center of Leeuwarden, reaching a very large and diverse audience.

During the festival, within LUNA Currents we organize an extensive side-program of theme nights, industry meetings, workshops and meeting opportunities for everyone who feels interested and inspired, from artists and curators to school classes and enthusiastic visitors.

In addition to these larger activities, we are present throughout the year with smaller actions, workshops and collaborative projects, also at international locations. Cultural institutions, companies and artists regularly call on our expertise for advice and concept development. We are happy to help regional artists find international partners and are found as collaboration partners through initiatives from all over Europe, and sometimes from beyond.

GOALS
The objective of the Media Art Friesland Foundation is to promote, initiate and organize cultural events in the field of media art, as well as to perform all other activities insofar as these are related to or may be beneficial to the foregoing, all in the broadest sense of the word. .

Our core activity is organizing the annual Media Art Festival (MAF). This consists of the Young Masters exhibition with works by 15 talented young artists. Around this we offer a program of workshops, film evenings and other activities for a wide audience. An essential and vital part of the activity program is the offer for schools that we offer in collaboration with Kunstkade. Children of all ages are given guided tours and workshops in which they create media art themselves. Also part of MAF is an annual thematic program with discussions and presentations that we organize in collaboration with other cultural institutions and Northern universities of applied sciences. With the LUNA Leeuwarden Urban Night Adventure, we make the step to public space for three evenings during MAF, where we present large-scale and accessible light and sound art. Throughout the year, the Media Art Friesland team also organizes individual projects and workshops in the field of media art throughout Friesland and internationally.
