Alcaeus Spyrou

A container ship is not an inanimate object. It travels thousands of miles on the high seas, and is full of life, stories, tragedy and hope. “Anina” is a psycho-geographic film essay that documents the ethnographic tendencies of the industrial landscape and its malevolent bearing over the individual. The shipping industry’s ever-shifting landscape crafts a unique mythology of its own.

Alcaeus Spyrou works as a visual artist with cinematic images. He uses a psychoanalytic view of cinema to deconstruct the interdependence of image and sound, and search for new dialects of the language of film. His work has been presented in international exhibitions such as the Liverpool Biennale, Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin, Bloomberg New Contemporaries, Whitechapel Gallery, and the European Media Art Festival. Alcaeus recently graduated from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague with an MA in Artistic Research.
