Peter William Holden (GB)
The Carousel
Peter William Holden creates kinetic sculptures by combining digital and mechanical elements. ‘The Carousel’ uses eight slide projectors. The slide projectors do not contain film, but clippings, in homage to the origins of cinematography in shadow theatre. In the background is rhythmic ticking as an ambient composition: the sound of metronomes. The speed of twelve frames per minute gives you plenty of time to listen and watch – in Smoel’s workshop or through the window on Oosterstraat. About the beauty that sound can give a space.
The fleeting and ephemeral nature of kinetic sculpture, like the light that makes a photograph appear and eventually fade again, fascinates Peter William Holden. His work focuses on ways to blur the boundaries between cinematography and sculpture.
