Experience sound in a new way.
In this sound installation by Jihen Ben Chikha (1993), your presence as a spectator is converted into a sound frequency. When you walk through the room, the vibrating sound waves you create are captured and converted into measurable signals. This makes the invisible electromagnetic phenomenon of sound more tangible. By also converting the frequencies into a binary code language of ones and zeros that are printed by a printer, they also become visible. By using this language, JIhen emphasizes the importance of the programmer.
Jihen’s work makes us aware of the environment we are in and the sounds we create. It opens up possibilities to focus on the invisible and inaudible nature of sound.
Jihen Ben Chikha recently graduated from ISBAS: Higher Institute of Fine Arts of Sousse in Tunisia.
