‘THE REAL’ & ‘THE VIRTUAL’: OPENING UP THE SPACE FOR IMMERSION

Modern Western society is steeped in digital media systems that have become part of our culture. But will we be able to appreciate the ‘real’ in an increasingly virtual world?

The graduation project ‘The Real’ & ‘The Virtual’: Opening Up the Space for Immersion by Wouter Smit (1983) is an immersive, interactive and audiovisual installation that poetically challenges you to rediscover the analog. He draws the digital media world towards the human and the mythical by influencing it with analog signals. The enchanting installation can be seen in a dark, almost meditative space, so that your senses work optimally. Opening Up the Space for Immersion: a quest for how to rediscover the connection between the ‘real’ and the ‘virtual’.
