Mountains surround the Blanca region in southern Spain. The dry but overgrown environment feels natural, but at the same time the human influence on the landscape is undeniable. During a residency in Spain, Maaike made short and temporary interventions in the area around Blanca. She filmed walks and movements in different places and brought the films together in an audiovisual installation for LUNA Young Masters 2024 in which visitors can join her journey through the landscape. ‘Walks in Blanca.’ sheds light on how our bodies occupy a place in and on the world and where her previous work is often an ode to the body, in her work for Young Masters 2024 she approaches the position of the body in a more open way. The films shown are made in the context of a residency program at AADK Spain in June 2023 made possible by Media Art Friesland.

Maaike Meindertsma is a visual artist from the north of the Netherlands. She graduated from the Fine Art Bachelor of Academy Minerva, Groningen, in 2022 and during her time at the academy and through sports, she developed a fascination for movement and the human body. Her work explores, among other things, how our bodies behave in different environments and how the body possesses a form of knowledge that is often difficult for ourselves to grasp. The core of her work lies in artistic research, which she makes visual in, for example, audiovisual installations, films and artist books.
