ARTIST IN SPACE 2019: Growing up in Public / Part 1

Media Art Friesland (MAF) used their international network and own expertise to coach a group of northern talents in the realization of a new artistic project. During this trajectory, the talents take new steps in their development, both artistically and technically.

Three talents were selected by means of an open call: Stieneke Dijkstra (visual artist and VJ), Wander Kars (sound artist and musician) and Thijs Dijkstra (IT developer and aspiring artist). The group is guided by the artistic staff of MAF and introduced to experienced international artists from the MAF network. Short, intensive sessions are held with them in which the experts take note of the artists’ plans and give specific tips.

In September, the group worked for a week at a public location on Wilhelminaplein in Leeuwarden so that the public could also follow the making process and the artists could test the first results with the public. The result of this making and coaching process is a fully-fledged interactive art installation ‘The Womb‘ that was presented in November during LUNA Leeuwarden Urban Night Adventure 2019.

Artist in Space 2019 is the first edition of an experimental talent development project, developed by Media Art Friesland and made possible thanks to support of We the North, the Mondriaan Fonds, de Noordenaars and Keunstwurk.
